Day 2 Pink Wednesday – The day of Wychen

Today's route: Nijmegen – Alverna – Wychen – Beuningen – Weurt – Nijmegen.

What a dreary start we had today. "It's going to pour," we were warned. And that it did - nonstop for two hours. If there is one thing I can say about 4Daagse, it is that no one complains. Somehow, marching in the rain together - knowing there are ~45,000 doing it with you - makes it seem less miserable.

Another strict rule about 4Daagse: you cannot use any sort of object to help you walk, for example, a walking stick. You're not even allowed to use an umbrella in the rain! (The official website has a page dedicated to ten different regulation manuals.)

Most of the walkers who drop out do it today - and of the people who have walked it before, this is their least favorite day.

At first we had only one cheerer. But as we continued, the total went up to at least 12 on our way out of Nijmegen. It was nothing like the hordes out yesterday morning!

Everything you get out of today comes from the crowds lining the streets. What is particularly fun is that today is Pink Wednesday - which means the people and towns are dressed in pink! The theme is acceptance and diversity. The day has grown into one of the largest and most well-known LGBTIQ+ events in the Netherlands.

What absolutely makes this event are the crowds that come to watch, support, and wish you success! They completely take your mind off any discomfort you are in, and graciously hand out snacks. Cucumbers, marshmallows, and gummy candy are the most popular snack. Other common snacks are fruits, vegetables, crackers, and pretzels.

Lots and lots of cucumbers are handed out

I keep trying to fathom the magnitude of watching the 4Daagse. The stream of walkers goes on for as far as you can see. Their dedication is honorable! And the rain doesn't even deter them.

The kids are so cute - holding out bowls of snacks. Some hold a single candy out to you, others pop the candy straight into their mouth.

Lots and lots of little hands waiting for high-fives

Everyone ducked for cover when it started to pour again

Brothers!

And just like that, we are back in Nijmegen - Day 2 in the books!
